Heart attack signs and symptoms

In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds. Damage to the heart during cardiac arrest depends on the time between the heart attack and your treatment. For this reason, recognizing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack can be life-saving. The following signs may indicate you or a loved one is having a heart attack:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Discomfort or pain in the jaw, neck, back, arm, or shoulder
  • Feeling nauseous or vomiting
  • Lightheadedness
  • Unusual fatigue
